Bush: 'You do not create terrorism by fighting terrorism'

I don't have time for a long post right now, but this quote from Bush pretty much sums up the arguement against what so many people seem to be thinking... that we are are the problem.

The NY Sun article that I got the title quote from is here.

Pelosi: "It was yet another example of how he is in denial over what is happening in the war on terror".

Here's a good question from Tigerhawk (via Malkin):
If al Qaeda's exploitation of the Iraq war to promote terrorism constitutes evidence that we should not have invaded Iraq, is its exploitation of our prosecution of terrorists, also to promote terrorism, evidence that we should not prosecute terrorists? If not, why not?
You decide.

Shhh ... Jim Webb May Have Racist Past

Carlos has a lesson for ya Jim...

Dan Riehl covers over at NewsBusters.

Allen v. Webb... a comparison on the issues.

Captain Ed has this shocker about Webb...
Webb's comments to the Times-Dispatch prompted Allen campaign officials to direct a reporter to Dan Cragg, a former acquaintance of Webb's, who said Webb used the word while describing his own behavior during his freshman year at the University of Southern California in the early 1960s. Webb later transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Cragg, 67, who lives in Fairfax County, said on Wednesday that Webb described taking drives through the black neighborhood of Watts, where he and members of his ROTC unit used racial epithets and pointed fake guns at blacks to scare them.

"They would hop into their cars, and would go down to Watts with these buddies of his," Cragg said Webb told him. "They would take the rifles down there. They would call then [epithets], point the rifles at them, pull the triggers and then drive off laughing. One night, some guys caught them and beat . . . them. And that was the end of that."
Very nice Jimbo!

John Hawkins has coverage too...
On the other hand, there is no argument that some of James Webb's books have used racist language in them -- which is intriguing given the situation. Here we have this debate over who said what to whom when, and yet, everyone acknowledges that Webb has used the N-word in print, but no one is printing exactly what he wrote...until today.
Can we please give Allen more support than he's getting? I feel so bad for the guy. Race-card politics is all the Dems and their willing friends in the media have left it seems. People need to understand that because Allen is (was) an '08 Presidential candidate AND up for re-election in these mid-terms, he's target #1 for his opponents who are just looking for any way to knock the guy down. Give me a break... the "N" word 30 years ago??? Can we please stop this over-the-top political correctness solely for the purpose of character assination?

Gore: Cigarette smoking is a 'significant contributor to global warming!'

The Drudge ReportTalk about blowing smoke...from Drudge:
Fri Sep 29 2006 09:04:05 ET - Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore warned hundreds of U.N. diplomats and staff on Thursday evening about the perils of climate change, claiming: Cigarette smoking is a "significant contributor to global warming!"

Gore, who was introduced by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said the world faces a "full-scale climate emergency that threatens the future of civilization on earth."

Gore showed computer-generated projections of ocean water rushing in to submerge the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, parts of China, India and other nations, should ice shelves in Antarctica or Greenland melt and slip into the sea.

"The planet itself will do nicely, thank you very much what is at risk is human civilization," Gore said. After a series of Q& A with the audience, which had little to do with global warming and more about his political future, Annan bid "adios" to Gore.

Then, Gore had his staff opened a stack of cardboard boxes to begin selling his new book, "An Inconvenient Truth, The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It," $19.95, to the U.N. diplomats.

Developing...
Senator James Inhofe on the Senate floor Thursday, September 28th:
This past Monday, I took to this floor for the eighth time to discuss global warming. My speech focused on the myths surrounding global warming and how our national news media has embarrassed itself with a 100-year documented legacy of coverage on what turned out to be trendy climate science theories.

Over the last century, the media has flip-flopped between global cooling and warming scares. At the turn of the 20th century, the media peddled an upcoming ice age -- and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 1930s, the alarm was raised about disaster from global warming -- and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 70’s, an alarm for another ice age was raised -- and they said the world was coming to an end. And now, today we are back to fears of catastrophic global warming -- and again they are saying the world is coming to an end.

Today I would like to share the fascinating events that have unfolded since my floor speech on Monday.
Go here for video of Inhofe on the Senate from from Monday... good stuff!

ACLU: A Legacy Of Hypocrisy

Crossposted from Stop The ACLU:

In case you haven't heard, a group of dissenters from the ACLU are rebelling and calling for a change in the current leadership of the main organization. The summary of things this new group is fed up with is hypocrisy and the ACLU is full of it. Purging the ACLU of its hypocrisy is bound to be a goliath task.

Where do we even begin with the ACLU's hypocrisy? How about its odd stance on the Second Amendment? They have decided that the term "the people" that is contained in the Second Amendment does not apply to "the people" as it does in all of the other rights contained in the Bill of Rights. They defend even the most radical in free speech for individuals, but somehow have adopted the opposite position on the Second Amendment. Surely it couldn't be that the Second Amendment doesn't fall within the boundaries of their liberal agenda! Could it?

In August of 2005 the New York ACLU sued against random bag searches on the NY Subway. Ironically the NYCLU HQ has a sign warning visitors that all bags are subject to search.

The ACLU have fought tooth and nail against the Bush administration's NSA program, a program designed to track international phone calls being made to or from suspected terrorist organizations. They have hailed themselves defenders of the right to privacy and labelled the program an illegal "secret" program of "domestic spying". All the while the ACLU has its own "secret " program of domestic spying of its own members and their personal financial information. This program has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with the real bottom line of fundraising. Former ACLU board member Michael Myers was shocked at this discovery.

The American Civil Liberties Union is using sophisticated technology to collect a wide variety of information about its members and donors in a fund-raising effort that has ignited a bitter debate over its leaders' commitment to privacy rights.

Some board members say the extensive data collection makes a mockery of the organization's frequent criticism of banks, corporations and government agencies for their practice of accumulating data on people for marketing and other purposes.

The group's new data collection practices were implemented without the board's approval or knowledge and were in violation of the ACLU's privacy policy at the time, according to Michael Meyers, vice president of the organization and a frequent internal critic. He said he had learned about the new research by accident Nov. 7 during a meeting of the committee that is organizing the group's Biennial Conference in July.

He objected to the practices, and the next day, the privacy policy on the group's Web site was changed. "They took out all the language that would show that they were violating their own policy," Meyers said. "In doing so, they sanctified their procedure while still keeping it secret."
After spending 23 years on the ACLU board, the "defenders of free speech" issued gag orders to him, not to speak about the issue. Now thats free speech for you.

When it comes to free speech the ACLU claim to be its most steadfast defender. Now, I am not an absolutist on unlimited free speech. However, most people would think that an organization arguing for hate cults to protest with "God Hates Fags" signs at military funerals, neo nazis to march through Jewish neighborhoods, and that child porn distribution is protected by the First Amendment are about as absolutist as it gets. Not so!

When it comes to pro-life protesters the ACLU could care less about their free speech rights. As a matter of fact they actively fight against pro-life protesters' free speech and have even tried RICO lawsuits on them. It is scary to see just how far the ACLU will go for its unrestricted abortion agenda. Free speech definitely takes a backseat to their pro-abortion agenda. They have even listed it as their number one priority pushing the defense of the First Amendment, the alleged heart and soul of the ACLU's mission, down to third on the list, after civil rights.

But don't just take my word for it, listen to the words of a former Execuitve Director:

The right to express unpopular opinions, advocate despised ideas and display graphic images is something the ACLU has steadfastly defended for all of its nearly 80-year history.

But the ACLU, a group for which I proudly worked as executive director of the Florida and Utah affiliates for more than 10 years, has developed a blind spot when it comes to defending anti-abortion protesters. The organization that once defended the right of a neo-Nazi group to demonstrate in heavily Jewish Skokie, Ill., now cheers a Portland, Ore., jury that charged a group of anti-abortion activists with $107 million in damages for expressing their views. Gushed the ACLU's press release: "We view the jury's verdict as a clarion call to remove violence and the threat of violence from the political debate over abortion."

Were the anti-abortion activists on trial accused of violence? No. Did they threaten violence? Not as the ACLU or Supreme Court usually defines it, when in the context of a call for social change.

The activists posted a Web site dripping with animated blood and titled "The Nuremberg Files," after the German city where the Nazis were tried for their crimes. Comparing abortion to Nazi atrocities, the site collected dossiers on abortion doctors, whom they called "baby butchers." ...

This is ugly, scary stuff. But it is no worse than neo-Nazi calls for the annihilation of the Jewish people, or a college student posting his rape fantasies about a fellow coed on the Web, both of which the ACLU has defended in the past.
Defending NAMBLA to print material advocating for sex between grown men and boys is the definition of defending "robust freedom of speech" in the ACLU's book, but defending people's right to protest against killing the unborn somehow fails to make the list.

But the hypocrisy does not end there. When it comes to protecting religious expression the ACLU has proven itself to be number one in America's religious censors. They have consistently shown themselves to be hostile towards Christianity in particular. When the Tangipahoa Parish School Board in Louisiana opened its board meetings with a prayer like they had for 30 years the ACLU sued. After the ACLU won that case and the School Board ignored the court ruling, Louisiana ACLU chief Joe Cook called for them to be jailed and compared them to terrorists. Mr. Cook is currently leading an attack on plan for a Katrina memorial paid for with private funds to be errected on private land simply because it is in the shape of a cross and might offend some sensitive passerby. When valedictorian of Foothill High, Brittany McComb, decided to share her faith voluntarily at her graduation cermony the ACLU said it was the right call to pull the plug. Currently when the ACLU wins a case from attacking religious expression it is awarded attorneys fees, often in the millions, at the expense of the American taxpayer. The U.S. House of Representatives recognized this abuse and passed the Public Expression Of Religion Act to put a stop to it. However, the threats and abuse will continue however if we can't convince the Senate to pass this as well.

But the hypocrisy goes even further. The ACLU's disdain for free speech outside of its agenda extends beyond Christians and pro-lifers to its own dissenting members. Very recently the ACLU attempted to put forth a policy restricting the free speech of its own members.

Natt Hentoff, another former ACLU board member, was incredulous.

"For the national board to consider promulgating a gag order on its members — I can't think of anything more contrary to the reason the A.C.L.U. exists."
After a huge controversy, media coverage, and public concern of the NY Attorney General's office the ACLU dropped the proposal. Instead they switched to more effective measures of replacing or voting out the members that were not in line with their agenda.

When it comes to principles the ACLU has none other than lining their pocketbooks and furthering their own liberal agenda. As I said at the beggining of the article, cleansing the ACLU of hypocrisy will be a mammoth task. I don't think its possible. I'm more hopeful that their own greed and corruption will eat them from the inside. I think we are beggining to see the cracks and hopefully enough light will shine through them to wake people up to the truth.

Blair: '[W]e will not win until we shake ourselves free of the wretched capitulation to the propaganda of the enemy'...

Click for video from HotAirTony Blair will be missed. Sky news has coverage.

From his final speech as PM at the annual Labour Party conference yesterday:
This is a struggle that will last a generation and more. But this I believe passionately: we will not win until we shake ourselves free of the wretched capitulation to the propaganda of the enemy, that somehow we are the ones responsible.

This terrorism isn't our fault. We didn't cause it.

It's not the consequence of foreign policy.

It's an attack on our way of life.

It's global.

It has an ideology.

It killed nearly 3,000 people including over 60 British on the streets of New York before war in Afghanistan or Iraq was even thought of.

It has been decades growing.

Its victims are in Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Turkey.

Over 30 nations in the world.

It preys on every conflict.

It exploits every grievance.

And its victims are mainly Muslim.

This is not our war against Islam.

This is a war fought by extremists who pervert the true faith of Islam. And all of us, Western and Arab, Christian or Muslim, who put the value of tolerance, respect and peaceful co-existence above those of sectarian hatred, should join together to defeat them.

It is not British soldiers who are sending car bombs into Baghdad or Kabul to slaughter the innocent.

They are there along with troops of 30 other nations with, in each case, a full UN mandate at the specific request of the first ever democratically elected Governments of those countries in order to protect them against the very ideology also seeking the deaths of British people in planes across the Atlantic.

If we retreat now, hand Iraq over to Al Qaida and sectarian death squads and Afghanistan back to Al Qaida and the Taleban, we won't be safer; we will be committing a craven act of surrender that will put our future security in the deepest peril.

Of course it's tough.

Not a day goes by or an hour in the day when I don't reflect on our troops with admiration and thanks - the finest, the best, the bravest, any nation could hope for.

They are not fighting in vain. But for this nation's future.
Straight-talk. (Video)

Everything you need to know about Chavez's Citgo...

Boycott CitgoCourtesy of the always-fantastic Mac Johnson - Chavez's Citgo Is No Friend of America:
What was once a respected “American” corporation, which happened to be owned by and partnered with the National Oil Co. of Venezuela, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), is now the American directorate of Chavez’s anti-American revolution.

Formerly, following the takeover of Citgo by PDVSA in 1990, the top positions at Citgo were all unofficially reserved for American executives, so that Citgo could function in the American business landscape as a competent and independent enterprise, removed from the politics of Venezuela. ...

... Today, the American leadership is gone, replaced by Chavez agents who have moved the company, at a cost of $69 million, from Tulsa to an extravagant new headquarters in Houston—a headquarters perhaps unique in the industry, since it includes a bulletproof citadel near the offices of the top executives. Rivero described it merely as “a crisis room to protect top management.” Perhaps Rivero’s personal past has given him a too literal interpretation of what American corporate leaders mean when they refer to a “hostile takeover.”

Given Chavez’s declared aim of destroying America’s power in the world, it seems relevant to assess just how total is Chavez’s takeover of Citgo. To address this, and developments since the 2005 Times article, I contacted Gustavo Coronel, a founding member of the board of directors of PDVSA, a former temporary member of the Harvard faculty, and once an elected representative in the House of Deputies of the Venezuelan state of Carabobo. He now resides in the United States, where he writes prolifically about the Chavista captivity of his nation. ...

Boycott Citgo... Chavez has also used the program in an attempt to tap into racial politics in America as a source of support. Jesse Jackson and Danny Glover are leading trumpeters of the program, which is targeted especially at African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods and Indian reservations. Chavez draws heavy support in Venezuela from Indian and other minority groups, which he has declared historical victims under his benevolent protection. To further his dream of an anti-American world revolution, he seemingly hopes to exploit America’s race issues so as to philosophically co-opt a portion of the divided population.

Lastly, Chavez hopes (in my opinion) to directly influence congressional policy and interfere in American elections with the program, which was engineered in concert with Rep. Bill Delahunt (D.-Mass.) and is administered (in part) through Citizens Energy, a non-profit co-operative founded and run by former Massachusetts Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II.

By doling out Chavez’s stolen oil at a 40% discount in liberal congressional districts and allowing the incumbent representatives to take credit for it, I believe Chavez seeks to alter the makeup of Congress and indebt Delahunt and other compromised congressmen to him. He has, essentially, turned pork-barrel politics into oil barrel politics and is buying votes for his sympathizers with a new brand of imported pork. SUV drivers are not the only ones with a costly addiction to foreign oil. Certain congressmen, having gotten the first hit for free, are now paying a price for the “free” oil with which they have bribed their constituencies. ...

Today, Citgo is — quite simply —
an unregistered agent
of a foreign government

Terror-free Energy Coalition...Today, Citgo is — quite simply — an unregistered agent of a foreign government, propagandizing for and subsidizing the Chavez regime in its neo-Marxist crusade against America’s alleged empire. Yet it is still treated as any other American business. The Citgo sign towers proudly over Kenmore Square in Boston and millions of Americans who were concerned to learn that Chavez seeks an alliance with Iran and North Korea, or who were incensed when Chavez called our President “the devil” at the United Nations last week, continue to mindlessly fill up at Citgo, giving Chavez not only profits from Venezuela’s oil (which is unavoidable) but profits from the retail sales of gasoline and diesel fuel (which is easily avoidable).

It has become clear that Chavez’s Citgo is no friend of America, what is less clear is just why America is still so friendly toward Citgo.
Please consider boycotting Citgo.

Update: 7-11 drops Citgo... good move!

... While it is easy to look back in hindsight and blame Bill Clinton, the full scale and nature of the terrorist threat was not widely appreciated until 9/11. Still: Bill Clinton did not fully grasp that he was at war. Nor did he intuit that war requires overcoming bureaucratic objections and a democracy's natural reluctance to use force. That is a hard lesson. But it is better to learn it from studying the Clinton years than reliving them.
Amen to that.

    Newt on the UN...

'Afghanistan is the new hot-war. It’s getting hotter.'

The Perfect EvilMichael Yon begins a three-part series with The Perfect Evil:
... In Afghanistan, heroin has become the Devil’s cocktail. “Smack” is already one of the most addictive and destructive drugs on Earth, and now numerous academic studies show addiction levels on the rise particularly among younger children. In a place where 90% of the world’s heroin supply originates, the Taliban, al-Qaeda and others harvest profits from opium poppy cultivation to buy weapons and equipment used to attack soldiers and civilians engaged in a mostly stalled reconstruction mission.

    the Taliban has resurged,
    re-armed, regrouped and re-emerged
    as a serious military threat.

...We are seeing the results on the battlefields of Afghanistan. Instead of the planned shift toward stability that was expected to be far enough along to enable us to draw down U.S. troops and turn over the security operations to NATO forces, the Taliban has resurged, re-armed, regrouped and re-emerged as a serious military threat.
General Barry McCaffrey on Pakistan and Afghanistan:
In my view, there is little question that the level of fighting has intensified rapidly in the past year. Three years ago, the Taliban operated in squad sized units. Last year they operated in company sized units (100+ men). This year the Taliban are operating in battalion sized units (400+ men).
Bill Clinton on the subject last night...
Now, I've never criticized President Bush, and I don't think this is useful. But, you know, we do have a government that thinks Afghanistan is only one-seventh as important as Iraq.
Bush has said countless times that troop levels will be decided by the Generals on the ground... if they need them, they'll get them. Troop levels in Iraq certainly aren't going down. Tough decisions.

Back to Michael Yon... I've not been checking in with Michael at his site regularly enough. That's wrong. He's amazing.

'Radical Islam' vs. 'Radical Christianity' 'Radical Homosexual Activism'

Radical Islam vs radical ChristianityStar Parker is right:
... Maybe sometime I'll publish the letters I get from homosexual activists. Some don't sound much different from the stuff coming out of the hills of Afghanistan. In Rosie's vein, I can easily say there isn't much difference between radical Islam and radical homosexual activism.

... Consider the experience of the great Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci who died of cancer last week. Fallaci spent her final years writing about the decline and collapse of her beloved Europe and its transformation into "Eurabia." By simply being critical of Islam, Fallaci was indicted in her native Italy.

So Fallaci, in her declining years, could only return to her home country if she was willing to risk up to two years imprisonment for simply writing unflattering commentary about Islam.

Are you listening Rosie? Do you really understand the nature of the dear freedom that you have?

... Rosie O'Donnell doesn't get it. She hasn't a clue about the civilization and the tradition that opens the door for her to broadcast her adolescent meanderings to millions every afternoon.

... It is sad and ironic that Muslim attacks on churches in response to innocent remarks made by the Pope in an important and thoughtful speech about faith and reason coincided also with Fallaci's death.

Fallaci, who found inspiration in the message of this Pope, saying: "I am an atheist, and if an atheist and a pope think the same things, there must be something true. It's that simple."

She also wisely observed, "The moment you give up your principles and your values, the moment you laugh at those principles and those values, you are dead, your culture is dead, your civilization is dead. Period."

    Pay attention, Rosie.
    Wishful thinking.

Liberal insider: MSM is 'overwhelmingly to the left' and 15-25:1 Democrat...

Shocker: Veteran WaPo Reporter Admits MSM's Bias Is 'Overwhelmingly to the Left'Dave Pierre at NewsBusters pointed me to a very interesting and candid conversation that Hugh Hewitt had with 25-year WaPo veteran Thomas B. Edsall...
HH: And so, why do you think it’s wrong, somehow, for people to want to hear news that they don’t consider as biased? I mean, that’s what it is. It’s just unbiased news is what people wanted. That’s why conservatives like me got platforms, and our blogs get read, and our columns get absorbed.

    TE: One, I don’t think it’s unbiased.

HH: It’s transparent at least. Everyone has bias. I agree with that. Everyone’s got bias.

TE: It’s transparent. Okay, that I would agree. And I agree that whatever you want to call it, mainstream media, presents itself as unbiased, when in fact, there are built into it, many biases, and they are overwhelmingly to the left.

    HH: Well, that’s very candid.
Candid indeed! Here's another snippet of interest:
HH: He probably is a Republican. But given that number of reporters out there, is it ten to one Democrat to Republican? Twenty to one Democrat to Republican?

TE: It’s probably in the range of 15-25:1 Democrat.

HH: Can the mainstream media ever be fair as a result?

TE: Well, you know, you’re asking, I think, a wrong question. I think the problem is that there is a real difficulty on the part of the mainstream media being sympathetic, or empathetic, whatever the word would be, to the kind of thinking that goes into conservative approaches to issues. I think the religious right has been treated as sort of an alien world…
It is what it is... which is why so many of us are getting news from other places.

Wallace: 'I felt as if a mountain was coming down in front of me.'

... The mountain that is Bill Clinton.

    Talk about a disproportionate response!

Michelle provides us a great recap to this post:

Vent with Michelle Malkin - Clinton and 'the conservative hit job'

Watch 'Vent' over at HotAir every Monday through Friday... it's required. (Click here to browse the archives.)

In addition to the very best video blog on the Internet, Michelle is still the top blogger in my book too. She's on the Clinton/Wallace story there also with a couple quotes from Wallace this morning on Fox & Friends...
"What it was was sheer wonder at what I was witnessing." (on his so-called smirk)

"There was no making up with him. He was angry. And when he left, he chewed out his staff." (on the post-interview mood)
    Narcissistic rage.

This will be a hot topic in the blogosphere this week! A query for "Wallace" + "smirk" gives you an idea. Stay tuned...

Update: NewsBusters has a number of great threads going on the topic of Bill Clinton...

Michael Rule: "Harry Smith Taken Aback as CBS Analyst Blames Clinton for bin Laden Failures"

Noel Sheppard: "This wasn't Bill Clinton's finest hour"... quite an understatement.

Rich Noyes: Why Clinton Blew His Top: FNC's Wallace Only Interviewer to Ask About Pre-9/11 Failures

From Fox & Friends Sept 8 2006Update #2: I had completely forgotten about this. I watched this episode of Fox & Friends where they were discussing ABC's 'Path to 9/11'. They had Wallace on for comments, and Wallace was clearly on the Clinton side. Bill obviously missed it... right-wing hatchet job.
    (hat tip Allah)

Update #3: Allah stays on it... more fact-checking - from the GOP.

More Wallace video... "he just blew".

    Update #4: Condi speaks up...
September 25, 2006 -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday accused Bill Clinton of making "flatly false" claims that the Bush administration didn't lift a finger to stop terrorism before the 9/11 attacks.
Rice hammered Clinton, who leveled his charges in a contentious weekend interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News Channel, for his claims that the Bush administration "did not try" to kill Osama bin Laden in the eight months they controlled the White House before the Sept. 11 attacks.
    Pointed rebuttal.

Update #5: Dick Morris jumps into the fray:
From behind the benign façade and the tranquilizing smile, the real Bill Clinton emerged Sunday during Chris Wallace’s interview on Fox News Channel. There he was on live television, the man those who have worked for him have come to know – the angry, sarcastic, snarling, self-righteous, bombastic bully, roused to a fever pitch. The truer the accusation, the greater the feigned indignation. Clinton jabbed his finger in Wallace’s face, poking his knee, and invading the commentator’s space. ...

... In my frequent phone and personal conversations with both Clintons in 1993, there was never a mention, not one, of the World Trade Center attack. It was never a subject of presidential focus. ...

... The ex-president is fully justified in laying eight months of the blame for the failure to kill or catch bin Laden at the doorstep of George W. Bush. But he should candidly acknowledge that eight years of blame fall on him.

One also has to wonder when the volcanic rage beneath the surface of this would-be statesman will cool. When will the chip on his shoulder finally disappear? When will he feel sufficiently secure in his own legacy and his own skin not to boil over repeatedly in private and occasionally even in public?
    The unraveling.

Reclaiming Freedom at the United Nations: An Intro...

    (cross-posted from Reject the UN)

Reclaiming the Language of Freedom at the United NationsCommon sense on 'liberty' and a Reagan quote... irresistable:
... Americans’ long record of upholding this tradition is rooted in the understanding that the issues of freedom that invigorate their lives are not solely American. People from every nation assimilate here because our tradition of freedom speaks to them. As Freedom House’s annual surveys show, these “universal aspirations of the human heart” are being embraced by millions more people around the world each year.

Yet at the United Nations - an organization established to enshrine this universal understanding of freedom and human rights - the very idea of freedom is being vigorously challenged and even discouraged. ...

... Americans understand that freedom is neither freely gained nor guaranteed and that its triumph in history is not inevitable. We must all remain vigilant in protecting freedom, for as President Ronald Reagan advised, it is never more than one generation from extinction.

'No one is a liberal's hero the way an adulterer is'... (updated)

Why liberals love adulteryKevin McCollough discusses:
... In the whole spin cycle of garbage about sexual behavior and why we're "made a certain way" we forget that choices are made for every single action taken. With Clinton the issue was "come on every body does it." With Robinson and McGreevey its simply, "I'm being true to myself."

    It's the refusal
    to make the choice
    to not be a slave
    to their impulses.

In truth its selfishness coupled with the refusal to curb their sexual appetite. Its the refusal to make the choice to not be a slave to their impulses. Basically they are still little boys who do not know how to discipline themselves - only now they wish the world to feel sorry for them. And in McGreevey's case he's openly seeking to work with kids for his life's mission now. ...
The homosexualization continues...It really is horrifying to feel like you're sitting on the sidelines watching our culture go down the toilet. It's even worse when you're an Episcopal watching your church lead the way.

    Jatfla:
"Did anyone notice his comment about how he enjoyed ‘being the President’?

That just jumped off the screen at me. He spent his entire presidency trying to ‘enjoy’ every speck of it…and now he’s trying to ‘enjoy’ his own imagining of it and resents any and all who don’t remember it the way he does.

    3) When you don’t have anything you can say, say it with emotion. Mostly he’s used anger and crying in the past. Anger we got, but where were the tears?

It’s all about those darned right-wingers and their vast, right-wing conspiracy that are out to get him. I feel so bad for that poor, lying, opportunistic b*****d.

Benedict XVI and Islam: the first year... according to 'The American Muslim'

The American MuslimFrom The American Muslim: (comments mine)
... Europe cannot be like America; and a strong religious presence here will not have the militaristic consequences (huh?)which American Muslims have witnessed with such dismay. The Evangelicals in Europe are far weaker (sadly), and think differently on political matters. A Europe defined in Christian terms is more likely to take its guidance from Ratzinger than from any reformed thinker (there are few Southern Baptists here, and as for liberal Christian thinkers, these typically do not differ from the secular consensus on moral issues, and are hence irrelevant). Moreover, there is no reason to suppose that the continent’s current coldness towards the claims of Christianity is a permanent condition. The increasing witness of Muslims may ironically trigger a Christian revival, as the Belgian novelist Jacques Neirynck has forecast. In that situation, the continent’s ethico-political domination by the Vatican would probably enhance the sense of security of the majority population, and this can only be in the interests of Muslims, for whom the threat is not the Church, but the far-right movements which may claim Christian principles (Rosie?), but will, we may reasonably hope, always be kept at a firm distance by Curial institutions that can never decisively reject the rulings of Vatican II.

    The increasing witness of Muslims
may ironically trigger a Christian revival

Many Muslims have been uncomfortable with Ratzinger because of his public statements about Islam. Yet we should be wary of emotional responses; and act in our interests, which are also those of a well-integrated, tolerant and successful Europe. Benedict XVI may not quite intend it, but on balance, his policies are likely to be good for Islam.
Interesting take... I'm still stuck on militaristic consequences though.

Three movies that present 'Bush-like' moral clarity instead of 'UN-like' debate regarding good and evil...

Conservative Moviegoers Attracted to Moral ClarityConservative Moviegoers Attracted to Moral Clarity
During the last two years, one of the more remarkable trends in media marketing has been the increased acceptance of and catering to conservatives. While patriotic and religious films were staples of Hollywood’s golden era, the moral clarity presented in those features was later deemed either uninteresting or irrelevant by the creative minds of Hollywood who chose instead to focus on anti-heroes, relativism, and the overall sour mood of the country following Vietnam and Watergate.

In the wake of 9/11, relativism has decidedly lost its charm with much of the public, and good vs. evil pictures (thanks in no small part to the courting of conservatives) became routinely popular. Three major releases -- “The Passion of the Christ,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and brand-new “Flyboys” -- have been specifically marketed to conservatives. Although they vary greatly in cinematic quality, all three share common threads that can illuminate why conservatives are flocking to these films in droves.

    The United Nations is Broken...

    (Cross-posted from Reject the UN)

The UN does a great many things reasonably well...I agree with Frank Salvato:
If the world is to survive this crisis of despotism the United States needs to call for the disbanding of the UN in favor of a world body consisting of functioning democracies, not those bought with the ill-gotten and oily gains of terrorism and tyranny, and not one that would seat the likes of Syria, Cuba and China on its human rights council.

The choice is clear. Either we stand pat with the United Nations, an organization that can’t even produce a definition for terrorism as it teeters on voting Venezuela a seat on the Security Council, or we move forward creating a new world body consisting of functioning democracies that embrace a common definition of right and wrong, good and evil. The question now is whether or not we have the guts to do it.
It seems so obvious that it's time for the U.S. to move on and the U.N. to move out, but I'm not holding my breath... especially if we can't even get Bolton confirmed.

The discussion is getting louder though.

    Vote here.

Mahmoud Hitler & Hugo Mussolini Go to the UN
And a nice catch from Oliver North:
Perhaps the strangest comment in the midst of all this came from outgoing U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan who said, in what one may hope is one of his final appearances, "Moreover, just as some who benefit from globalization may feel threatened by it, so, many who are statistically safer from conflict do not feel safe. For that, we have terrorism to thank. It kills or maims relatively few people, compared to other forms of violence." Perhaps that explains why defeating terrorism has never been a priority for the United Nations.
    Good riddance.

    Indonesian Christians Executed... (updated)

    So much for justice:
The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) (www.persecution.org) has just become informed that the three Christian men facing the death penalty in Indonesia have been executed by firing squad. The men were executed just after midnight on Friday, September 22, 2006, Indonesia time.

“Justice has once again been denied Indonesia’s Christians,” said Jeremy Sewall, ICC Policy Analyst. “I am deeply saddened at this news, and ask all concerned Christians to pray for the families of these men. This is a tragedy. This is not justice.”

After their execution was stayed last month by the Attorney General for Central Sulawesi, Mohammad Yahya Sibe, he was suddenly replaced. He was the one who had to give the order for the executions to proceed. The Chief of Police was also suddenly replaced and sent to another department. The appeal for these men that should have lasted months or even a year to process was denied within weeks.
    Christian violence and rage? prayer.

    Europe is in trouble...

the European UmmahFrom the Brussels Journal:
...Unless Europe rediscovers its will to survive – and it may already be too late (though as a Christian I do not exclude miracles) – soon furious Islamists may be holding sway over Europe in much the same way as the Taliban did over Afghanistan, removing all visible remnants of pre-Islamic culture. The Cathedrals of Europe may share the fate of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Christian works of art may be destroyed. Surely, a faith that forbids the depiction of human figures will be offended by the Christian art of medieval Europe and the nudes of the Renaissance. Perhaps it is wise to seriously consider salvaging as many European cultural treasures as one already can, before it is too late, and bringing them to safety elsewhere.
Tough not to agree with this, although it's not received much press from what I can tell. The UK, France, Italy... many countries in Europe are losing their identity and are becoming overrun by political correctness regarding their growing un-assimilated Muslim population.

Moral relativism exacts a heavy price. Pay attention America.

Taxonomy: 'Vieira'Mark Finkelstein and the gang at NewsBusters have Meredith Vieira covered:
Vieira surely knows she is under the microscope for signs of liberal bias. She obviously doesn't care. Beyond her implied endorsement of Chavez' message, she conducted a fawning interview of Clinton that was embarrassing in its unctuousness:

  • Speaking of his Clinton Global Initiative, she claimed "everyone is calling you a genie" for his ability to accomplish good things.
  • When asked to speculate as to Bin Laden's whereabouts, Clinton said he had no [military] intelligence. Vieira jumped to correct the record: "You have lots of intelligence!"
  • She reminded him that while he was in office, "you were very popular." True. Well, other than that impeachment thing. And never winning a majority of the, ahem, popular vote. And unpopularity so great it led to the historic GOP tidal wave of 1994.
  • And how's this for a hard-hitting question, referring to a New York Times article about his marriage: "Do you think that's fair?"
  • Taxonomy: 'Vieira'...and interviewing Bill Clinton, she said:
"Now, it's easy to dismiss somebody like Chavez -- and some have -- as a nut. But do you think he is giving voice to wider frustration in the developing world about this country and this country's policies? Do we need to change the way we act?"

'Only by running from who we are will we win a popularity contest at the U.N. It is a competition we shouldn’t have entered'... (updated)

The UN Platform for Democracy's DefeatAnne Bayefsky is on target with her comments on a not-so-typical Opening Day at the U.N.
... The real surprise of the day, however, was President George W. Bush. Last year at this time the president issued a list of reforms he expected from the U.N. in the near future: a new human-rights body which didn’t count abusers among its members, a comprehensive treaty against terrorism, meaningful institutional reforms in the area of oversight, accountability, efficiency. Not one of those demands has been met, but instead of issuing a failing grade, the president said nothing at all about U.N. reform. On Iran, the most he could muster was “Iran must abandon its nuclear-weapons ambitions.” No talk of sanctions. No mention of consequences for Iran’s obvious refusal to abandon those ambitions. On Hamas he said “the world is waiting to see whether the Hamas government will…pursue an extremist agenda.” Waiting to see? Just how many rocket attacks, kidnappings, speeches inciting racial hatred and violence, or murders does it take be an extremist? And on the Palestinian-Israeli front he said “the Palestinian people have suffered from…the daily humiliation of occupation” — the exact language of…yes, Kofi Annan.

Not one of those demands has been met,
but instead of issuing a failing grade,
    the president said nothing
    at all about U.N. reform.

No doubt, given the hostility of the U.N. forum toward America, nothing but obsequious babble from an American president would be well-received. Which is exactly the real and present danger of the U.N. — only by running from who we are will we win a popularity contest at the U.N. It is a competition we shouldn’t have entered.
The U.N. is corrupt, anti-America/Israel, pro-Communist, feckless, seemingly un-reformable, dictator-driven, and made up of members and administrators that are only interested in maintaining their individual power and status-quo. The U.N . is not about right and wrong... it's a bought and sold failure, and should be identified as such.

    Previous: Good riddance Kofi

I am Ashamed the US is a Member of the United NationsUpdate: It's time for America to leave the UN:
... Yes, we're stuck in Iraq and we can't abandon our troops. But when we've finally reached the point that a room full of international freeloaders are applauding wildly as our president is called the Devil and our demise is predicted, then it's time to seriously reassess whom we want to deal with, in what manner and in what international forum.

Be assured that after this week's antics in New York, more and more Americans will come to believe that expensive, do-nothing diplomatic assemblies such as the United Nations are something we can live without.
Especially as we're now giving the UN $5B+ a year!!!

Update #2: Who and What Does the UN Represent?
The bottom line is that until the UN changes its mandate, from being a forum of the least common denominator to an organization with a rudimentary sense of right and wrong, its agencies will reflect the depravity of the organization. UN agencies like UNIFIL will not prevent future conflict and will actually instigate it unless it is clear that they must to stop terrorists from attacking Israel and unless they are given the means to prevent provocations. Otherwise, any premature ceasefire which will allow Hezbollah to survive with much of its arsenal intact will invite a replay of recent events only with greater human suffering.
    Peace in our time.
