BMI Special Report: Global Warming Censored

A must-read report from the Business & Media Institute:

Global warming crusader Al Gore repeatedly claims the climate change “debate’s over.” It isn’t, but the news media clearly agree with him. Global warming skeptics rarely get any say on the networks, and when their opinions are mentioned it is often with barbs like “cynics” or “deniers” thrown in to undermine them.

Consistently viewers are being sent only one message from ABC, CBS and NBC: global warming is an environmental catastrophe and it’s mankind’s fault. Skepticism is all but shut out of reports through several tactics – omission, name-calling, the hype of frightening images like polar bears scavenging for food near towns and a barrage of terrifying predictions.

The Business & Media Institute analyzed 205 network news stories about “global warming” or “climate change” between July 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2007. BMI found a meager 20 percent of stories even mentioned there were any alternative opinions to the so-called “consensus” on the issue.

• Disagreement Squashed: Global warming proponents overwhelmingly outnumbered those with dissenting opinions. On average for every skeptic there were nearly 13 proponents featured. ABC did a slightly better job with a 7-to-1 ratio, while CBS’s ratio was abysmal at nearly 38-to-1.

• Can I See Some ID?: Scientists made up only 15 percent of the global warming proponents shown. The remaining 85 percent included politicians, celebrities, other journalists and even ordinary men and women. There were more unidentified interview subjects used to support climate change hype than actual scientists (101 unidentified to just 71 scientists)

• What’s It Going to Cost?: All “solutions” have a price, but the cost of fighting global warming was something you rarely heard on the network news. Only 22 stories (11 percent) mentioned any cost of “fixing” global warming. On the rare occasion cost came up, it came from the lips of a skeptic like Kentucky state Rep. Jim Gooch (D), who said one climate change bill in Congress “would cost $6 trillion.”

• CBS the Worst: Journalist/global warming advocate Scott Pelley helped CBS be, by far, the worst network. Pelley argued in 2006 that he shouldn’t have to include skeptics in such stories because “If I do an interview with [Holocaust survivor] Elie Wiesel, am I required as a journalist to find a Holocaust denier?” In 2007, he helped ensure only four skeptics were included by CBS – and not a single one was a scientist. Compare that to the 151 people used by the network to promote global warming hysteria. The wildly one-sided outcome was not surprising given remarks by some of its other journalists. Harry Smith declared that “There is, in fact, global climate change” on the Aug. 7, 2007, “Early Show.”

• ABC the “Best”: Despite its over-the-top climate hypocrisy of jet-setting journalists around the world to cover climate change, ABC included more skepticism (36 percent) in its broadcasts than either NBC or CBS. Still, the network has plenty of work to do. Bill Weir made the outrageous claim during the Nov. 18, 2007, “Good Morning America” that “all these scientists” urge immediate action to stop global warming. Weather personality Sam Champion even referred to the most recent U.N. climate report as “unequivocal” and “definitive.

Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory?

Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels.

LOS ANGELES -- The proliferation of drifting Antarctic icebergs caused by rising temperatures is creating a vast new ecosystem of plankton and krill that may have the power to absorb some of the carbon dioxide that is driving global warming, scientists reported yesterday.

The researchers, led by oceanographer Kenneth Smith Jr. of California's Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, found that these iceberg-associated communities may cover a significant portion of Antarctic seas.

The ecosystem uses photosynthesis to take carbon from the atmosphere and convert it into plant life and other forms of organic carbon that can be held in the ocean.

"I think it can be a substantial contribution" to reducing carbon dioxide levels, Smith said. "These things have been ignored forever."

In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.

If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming. ...

It's a must read... at least if you want to get past the monstrous ego and neediness of Al Gore and back to reality on the hyper-dramatized and hyper-hyped topic of global temperatures. Sheesh.

His serious aviation habit means he is hardly the best person to lecture others on the environment. But John Travolta went ahead and did it anyway.

The 53-year-old actor, a passionate pilot, encouraged his fans to "do their bit" to tackle global warming. But although he readily admitted: "I fly jets", he failed to mention he actually owns five, along with his own private runway.

Clocking up at least 30,000 flying miles in the past 12 months means he has produced an estimated 800 tons of carbon emissions – nearly 100 times the average Briton's tally.

Travolta made his comments this week at the British premiere of his movie, Wild Hogs.

He spoke of the importance of helping the environment by using "alternative methods of fuel" – after driving down the red carpet on a Harley Davidson. ...

Eco-hysteria over DDT... a lesson on global warming alarmists? (updated)

Who says there's never any good news? After more than 30 years and tens of millions dead - mostly children - the World Health Organization (WHO) has ended its ban on DDT.

DDT is the most effective anti-mosquito, anti-malaria pesticide known. But thanks to the worldwide environmental movement and politically correct bureaucrats in the United States and at the United Nations, the use of this benign chemical has been discouraged in Africa and elsewhere, permitting killer mosquitoes to spread death.

I don't expect any apologies from the people who permitted this to happen. But I am thankful this nightmare is ending. ...

... Junk-science debunker Steven Milloy, an adjunct scholar with the Competitive Enterprise Institute, wonders why the environmentalists took so long to change their minds.

"There are no new facts on DDT - all the relevant science about DDT safety has been available since the 1960s," Milloy says.

Milloy adds:

"It might be easy for some to dismiss the past 43 years of eco-hysteria over DDT with a simple 'never mind,' except for the blood of millions of people dripping from the hands of the WWF [World Wildlife Fund], Greenpeace, Rachel Carson, Environmental Defense Fund, and other junk science-fueled opponents of DDT."

Milloy reminds us that the same people who spread DDT hysteria are now pushing the global-warming scare.

"If they and others could be so wrong about DDT, why should we trust them now?"

The people who bring you the news of the day about nonexistent wiretaps and hypothetical invasions of privacy disguised as actual events are the same ones reporting on the “scientific evidence” that man is slowly turning Earth into the planet Venus. Unfortunately for the NRDC, Al Gore, and other radical environmentalists, since man didn’t cause global warming, man can’t cure it.

Al Gore tells us that the world is getting hotter, and that man is responsible for making it that way. Unless we take drastic steps now to correct this problem the ice caps will melt, our cities will flood, farmland will dry up and the rainforests will die.

Before we get caught up in the same hysteria that thirty years earlier predicted the arrival of a new Ice Age, we might pause for a moment and ask: is any of this true? And if it is, what role did man really play in altering the climate, and if it is getting hotter, what (if anything) can he actually do about it? ...

Gore: Cigarette smoking is a 'significant contributor to global warming!'

Fri Sep 29 2006 09:04:05 ET - Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore warned hundreds of U.N. diplomats and staff on Thursday evening about the perils of climate change, claiming: Cigarette smoking is a "significant contributor to global warming!"

Gore, who was introduced by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said the world faces a "full-scale climate emergency that threatens the future of civilization on earth."

Gore showed computer-generated projections of ocean water rushing in to submerge the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, parts of China, India and other nations, should ice shelves in Antarctica or Greenland melt and slip into the sea.

"The planet itself will do nicely, thank you very much what is at risk is human civilization," Gore said. After a series of Q& A with the audience, which had little to do with global warming and more about his political future, Annan bid "adios" to Gore.

Then, Gore had his staff opened a stack of cardboard boxes to begin selling his new book, "An Inconvenient Truth, The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It," $19.95, to the U.N. diplomats.

Senator James Inhofe on the Senate floor Thursday, September 28th:

This past Monday, I took to this floor for the eighth time to discuss global warming. My speech focused on the myths surrounding global warming and how our national news media has embarrassed itself with a 100-year documented legacy of coverage on what turned out to be trendy climate science theories.

Over the last century, the media has flip-flopped between global cooling and warming scares. At the turn of the 20th century, the media peddled an upcoming ice age -- and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 1930s, the alarm was raised about disaster from global warming -- and they said the world was coming to an end. Then in the 70’s, an alarm for another ice age was raised -- and they said the world was coming to an end. And now, today we are back to fears of catastrophic global warming -- and again they are saying the world is coming to an end.

Today I would like to share the fascinating events that have unfolded since my floor speech on Monday.

Micheal Reagan has it right.

Hezbollah’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, sounded like the neighborhood Mafia don, offering money for “decent and suitable furniture” and a year’s rent on a house to any Lebanese who lost his home in the month-long war. It was his way of telling the people who their real friends are. It’s not the toothless Lebanese government, he was telling them, but your friendly neighborhood hit men who have your best interests at heart

I think he may have learned the tactic from another mob boss, Al Capone, well known for handing out cash and other goodies to the folks in the neighborhood when he wasn’t beating people to death with a baseball bat or celebrating St. Valentine’s Day by having his enemies machine-gunned to death.

Of course, the NY Times would rather discuss Hezbollah's "Vast Social Services Network".

Maybe it's time to move to Australia... or at least try to recruit John Howard, cause it's not going to get better with Speaker Pelosi and President Gore.

It can't be easy being a Republican Governor in the land of fruits & nuts, so Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan to forge ahead with "the most aggressive U.S. program to reduce global warming" isn't much of a surprise. Anything that flies in the face of the Bush Administration is political gold as far as Arnold is concerned.

Still, are we really talking about a "breakthrough" as ABC News would have us think? Or is it just more political pandering as the global warming scare continues to build up a head of steam with media-induced hot air?

In conclusion, I'd like to suggest that none of this really matters anyway... at least according to the aformentioned ABC News.

Global warming is real...

... it is definitely hotter in Virginia this week than it was a month ago.

It's hot. Damn hot. Hot enough to make it seem obvious that "global warming" is real... and it may be. But let's not get caught up in Al Gore hysteria just yet.

Records were set 76 years ago - decades before the controversy over "man-made global warming" began. And the highest recorded temperature on earth was back in 1922.

We've got to get past the labeling and hysteria.. Using the term "global warming" has become the enviros equivalent to "pro-choice". Of course... that sounds right! Of course we want "choice", and it is... really hot!

But the issue with the rhetoric is not typically that the earth is warming, but with the seemingly indisputable theory that the warming is being caused by man... more specifically by big business and SUV-driving soccer Moms across the country.

The "caused by man" tag on the term "global warming" has to divide the debate into three categories. The first would be a group of global warming non-believers... those who either don't buy that the earth is warming in the first place or who admit to an apparent warming trend but only as part of a normal cycle. This group sees no reason for concern at this point and thinks all the hype is absurd.

The second group believe the earth may in fact be warming beyond what could be considered a "normal" trend, but they don't yet buy into the idea that man is a primary cause... and that there are non-"global warming" reasons for heat. (like summer!) Unlike the non-believers though, this group is concerned about the possibility of negative effects from the warming and wants to actively seek out potential ways for man to intervene or at least better adapt to the warming should it continue to rise in coming decades.

The Al Gore's of the world make up the 3rd category. This group seems to want to politicize "global warming" as a man-made issue deserving of priority even over the war against Islamofascism. The world as we know it is coming to an end next week if we all don't drive a Prius and if Bush doesn't sign Kyoto. Of course, knocking down our economy would be a bonus side-effect, as the U.S. is far to powerful now anyway.

Many in this last group want to move on to discussing solutions, as if disputing or questioning the "man made" aspect of what "global warming" has apparently come to mean. They seem to say that as if agreeing on the cause of the warming isn't really that important... let's just get right into ways of cutting down our greenhouse gas emissions. But if the current warming is part of a 30-40 year trend, or if it's the result of the sun being closer or hotter... then isn't that something we should be more sure of before we commit huge amounts of money and resources and risk the health of our economy?

This is what I don't get about Gore and his followers. It's like they're playing poker and want to go all-in with an unsuited 5/queen combo and a king showing. How could we have been concerned about global cooling 30 years ago, and now want to bet everything on heat? Here is a quote from a 1975 Newsweek article on the coming ice age:

"Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change. ... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."

Do we not understand that the earth is constantly heating and cooling? How were there record temperatures in the 20's and 30's? How accurate were readings 100...200...300 years ago? How accurate can we really expect to be with ice core and tree ring readings?

For a group of people that generally think we can deal with evil in the world through talking instead of acting, it's bizarre that with respect to global warming there's no discussion allowed... only what feels like knee-jerk action.

I don't know...the earth changes, and human beings adapt. Isn't that it? Plan for the worst and pray for the best... not cut off your leg because toe is broken? Maybe I'm too locked into my own ideology... maybe I just can't bring myself to support anything Al Gore stands for. That really could be the issue for me... or maybe I'm just not informed enough. Regardless, I'm still a skeptic.
